Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a proven effective and natural method of treatment. It works by manually adjusting the joints of the body, enabling them to function more efficiently thereby helping to alleviate pain, discomfort and promote healing.

Developed in 1895 by D.D Palmer in the USA, Chiropractic has since gone on to become the world’s third most popular primary healthcare profession. Since its inception several different approaches to Chiropractic have been developed e.g. Diversified, Gonstead, Logan, Thompson and McTimoney. At KW Elite Chiropractic we specialise in the McTimoney and Diversified methods.

Chiropractic can be used on any joint in the body to alleviate and treat a variety of muscular skeletal conditions such as neck and back problems and help with postural realignment. Chiropractic can be used on everybody from infants to the elderly, those with compromised mobility and pregnant women due to its gentle holistic approach. As with all treatments there is a potential for adverse side effects, though rare, these can include, mild headache, fatigue, light headedness, and possible tenderness in the area that has been treated. Any side effects should resolve within 24 hours. To help this, we advise clients to ensure they are hydrated both before and after treatment.

At KW Elite Chiropractic, we are registered and regulated by the General Chiropractic Council and fully insured. We tailor our treatments depending on your presenting condition, our aim is to use the most effective and conservative method to restore you to full health as soon as possible. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask your therapist.

Diversified

Globally the most commonly used method of Chiropractic is the Diversified technique. The aim of this method is to realign the joints of the body back to their optimal position. This reduces interference within the nervous system allowing the body to heal itself, whilst also improving postural realignment and increasing mobility, which in turn helps to reduce pain and discomfort. During this process the affected bones are manually manipulated, which can cause a popping or cracking sound from within the joint. This is a gas bubble within the fluid of the joints. It is a completely harmless and natural noise and the gas bubble reforms in around 20 minutes. The popping or cracking noise is not indicative of the value or effectiveness of the adjustment, it is purely the movement within the joint to its correct position.

McTimoney Chiropractic Technique

Developed by the late John McTimoney, this style of Chiropractic is known for its precise gentle whole body holistic approach. The gentle nature of this method makes it suitable for all patients of all ages, as well as in pregnancy. The objective of McTimoney treatment is to stimulate the body’s own self healing mechanisms for recovery. It gently adjusts the bones to improve alignment of the skeleton, rebalancing the body. This helps to improve the efficiency of the nervous system, relieve pain and discomfort and increase mobility. As this is a gentler approach to adjustments many clients find it relaxing and a good alternative to other Chiropractic techniques.

Western Medical Acupuncture

Western Medical Acupuncture (WMA) can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions and involves the insertion of micro needles into the skin, helping to stimulate the nervous system thereby promoting healing and recovery. Deriving from traditional Chinese Acupuncture, WMA combines the benefits of acupuncture, current Western medical knowledge of anatomy and physiology, together with the principles of evidence based medicine.

At KW Elite Chiropractic, we do not offer WMA as a stand-alone therapy, however it may be used in conjunction with your Chiropractic manipulation and is a very effective complementary treatment.

WMA is a very low risk therapy, and is only performed with the client’s expressed permission. However, if you suffer from any blood clotting disorders or are taking any anticoagulant medications such as Warfarin, ensure you notify your therapist at the start of the consultation. If you have any further questions or require any additional information please speak to your therapist.

Massage Therapy

Massage is a hands on therapy that works the soft tissues of your body to help relax them, release tension, pain, discomfort and stimulate healing.

At KW Elite Chiropractic, we do not offer massage as a stand-alone therapy, however it may be used in conjunction with your Chiropractic manipulation and is a fantastic tool to complement your treatment.

There are many different types of massage, at KW Elite Chiropractic we use the following:

Trigger point massage: Sometimes muscles can develop trigger points, these are sensitive areas where small patches of the muscles have contracted and are unable to relax. By working these specific areas this allows the muscles to relax and release the tension.

Sports Massage: this works on broader areas of the body. This technique allows the multiple layers of soft tissue to be worked on simultaneously, to reduce pain and allow better movement and mobility.

Instrument assisted massage: this style of massage uses a specifically designed tool applied to the affected part of the body to help break down adhesions and any scar tissue. It also helps stimulate blood flow to the area thereby reducing recovery time.

There is a very low level of risk associated with massage. Following treatment this may take the form of feeling more tired, lethargic, or thirsty, however, you may also feel more invigorated, energised and mobile. Other symptoms may include light headedness, tenderness over the areas that have been treated, and in some clients, they might experience localised superficial bruising. Any symptoms experienced should pass quite quickly. As with all forms of therapy, please be mindful of your state of awareness, take it easy and make sure you drink lots of water and allow your body to heal.

If you have any questions or require any additional information please feel free to discuss this with your therapist.

Therapeutic Exercises

Therapeutic exercises may be prescribed by your therapist to help aid your rehabilitation. These exercises are aimed at restoring balance to the body, and work along-side other therapies you are receiving to help with your recovery.

The aim of these exercises include:

  • To maintain or increase Range of Motion of the joints,
  • Improve balance and coordination,
  • To improve posture and or correct faulty posture,
  • Increase strength, power and endurance of muscles,
  • Induce relaxation, such as breathing exercises.

There are a wide range of therapeutic exercises that can be prescribed depending on your needs. These exercises are individually tailored to your condition and will be adapted to your ability. They should take no more than 5-10 minutes to perform, require little to no equipment or specific gym attire and are easily incorporated into your daily life. Your therapist will set out the frequency and duration of these exercises for optimal recovery and will assess your progress at each visit. To get the best outcome from your treatment your active participation is encouraged.

At KW Elite Chiropractic we may incorporate therapeutic exercises alongside your chiropractic manipulation to aid you returning to full health as soon as possible, we do not offer it as a stand-alone therapy.

As with any exercise regime there is a very small degree of risk, if you have any concerns with regard to the exercises please consult with your therapist.

Sports Taping

Taping is the use of a sticky tape applied directly to the skin of the dysfunctional area. There are many forms of taping (Sports Taping, Functional Fascial Taping, Kinesio® Taping and Neural unloading). At KW Elite Chiropractic we specialise in Sports Taping, which is a technique mainly used for acute injuries. It is an aid in postural re-education and to help support unstable joints. Due to its adaptability, this treatment is not confined to injuries sustained from sports and can be used for a variety of conditions.

The benefits of sport taping in assisting the healing process include:

  • Helping with pain management by limiting joint Range of Motion.
  • Physical support to the injury.
  • Helping to reduce inflammation.
  • Enhancing your proprioceptive feedback (your spatial awareness of your joints).

At KW Elite Chiropractic, we may use taping in conjunction with your comprehensive rehabilitation programme, but we do not offer it as a stand-along therapy. Taping is not a cure, the risks involved are minimal, clients are advised to follow their therapist’s guidance with regard to returning to normal daily activities.

To avoid allergic reactions to sticky tape, a hyperallergenic tape is always used directly on the skin. However, if you have any concerns regarding this please speak to your therapist.
